Worst Song Ever
The song "Who let the Dogs Out" by the Baha Men is, in my opinion, one of the worst songs ever created. The song includes the line "Who let the Dogs Out?" about 20 times over and over again. There is also repeated "woofing" as well. There are so many grammar violations that the song loses about 40 points. The song also loses another 12 points for how awkward it is. Another 10 points are lost for incoherence. And finally another 15 are lost for poor enunciation. Altogether Who let the Dogs out has a rating of -27. Good job Baha Men!

Social Relevance
I Kisses a Girl- Katy Perry
I Kissed a Girl is about a woman who experiments with her sexuality. The song relates to society today because many more people are experimenting with their sexuality than ever before. The song is filled with imagery that allows the listener to picture now this girl's night has been going. Basically, a woman is out at a bar or club and is slightly drunk, she sees a beautiful girl and decides to go flirt with her because she is curious as to if she likes women or not. The two kiss, even though she has a boyfriend and she comes to the conclusion that she enjoys women but may not definitely like them. Katy Perry says, "it felt so wrong, it felt so right, don't mean I'm in love tonight". It feels wrong because society says being gay is wrong, but it also feels right because she enjoys being with women. But just because she enjoys it, does not mean she is in love or going to be with the girl. Many women can relate to this song today because it is common for girls to get drunk at parties and then make out with their friends. When this song came out, everyone loved it and was singing it. This furthered social acceptance of gay people and, in some ways, made being gay seem "cool".
Poker Face- Lady Gaga
When I first heard Poker Face I thought it was an amazing song. The opening hook of "Ma Ma Ma Ma Ma" is truly captivating. There's something about the beat that makes anyone want to get up and dance. But moreover Poker Face has an underlying metaphor similar to "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry. Poker is a story about a woman who thinks of other women while she sleeps with her boyfriend. It is common today for men and women to experiment with their sexuality and to even have a polygamous relationships. Gaga disguises this meaning in the lyrics by comparing sexuality to a game of poker. Gaga isn't using her "Poker Face" to hide what cards she has, she is using it to hide her feelings for women and her emotions. Thus she "bluffing with her muffin".
Dear Mr. President- P!nk/ Indigo Girls
This song deals with the singers opinion of President Bush. President Bush was not considered to be the greatest of Presidents and he had one of the lowest approval ratings of any president. The song makes many allusions to his presidency and his failures. When P!nk says "rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away" she is referring to familys in Iraq whose houses have been destroyed by the war. And when she says "what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she was gay" she is referring to the vice president's daughter and her relationship with her father.

You're so Vain-Carly Simon- 70's
Carly Simon is a revolutionary artists because of her many talents. Not only is Carly a singer but she has also been an actress as well as a children's story writer. Her talents have won her a Grammy, And Academy Award as well as a Golden Globe Award. Carly Simon's talents have also landed her a spot in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame. One of Carly's most notable songs, "You're so Vain", has lead to Carly's success. The song is about a girl who breaks up with a guy and talks about how self centered he was and how he thinks he is better than her. Carly uses a stupendous amount of imagery to paint the picture of a selfish and self indulgant man. "You walked into the partyLike you were walking onto a yachtYour hat strategically dipped below one eyeYour scarf it was apricot" Not only is this man vain but also welld ressed. Maybe too well dressed. The song is also very paradoxal for it's main chorus line "You're so vainYou probably think this song is about youYou're so vain". She is singing a song about how vain a man is, and then claiming that he even thinks the song she is singing is about him" It kind fo doesn't make much sense it is, nonetheless, humorous and catchy. In a way, the song is almost the opposite of personification because Carly describes him almost like he is not even human. He thinks he is better than humans or a god. But Carly herself personifies him, despite his obvious vanity.
Devil in her Heart-The Beatkes-60's Song Analysis
The Beatles were a sensation since the moment they were heard in England. Their popularity after they moved to America and blew our minds. The Beatles are so world renowned because they came up with so many unique styles of music and rocked world of music. They influenced a generation to rebel against the conservative morals of their time and to change the world. Even after the band has split up and half of them have died, they still continue to empower the world and advocate progression. One partivular song, Devil in Her Heart exemplifies the beautiful work of the Beatles and they'e mastery of music. The song uses many hyberbolies with lines such as, "she's got the devil in her heart and she's gunna tear your heart apart". These lyrics are exaggerations because as mean and nasty and self centered as this woman is, she is most likely not going to actually murder anyone, nor is she ebil enough to be deemed "the devil".The line, "she's an angel sent to me" is a metaphor because she cannnot be a real angel, just a figurative one. This leads to a paradox because she cannot be a devil and an angel simultaneously, they are opposites. Lastly, the song utilizes good imagery because as the woman is being described you can picture her. I was able to picture a pretty girl tarrign out someone's heart.

This song contains paradox because Madonna is sick of dancing alone but she doesn't want anyone else to see her s she shuts her door. If she shuts her door then no one can dance with her. And if someone dances with her, then she will be seen.

This song has personification because Britney and Madonna are describing music as if it is a real tangible thing, but it is not. "gonna take on the music"

Love shack contains personification because the love shack takes on an energy similar to a being. There is so much action and entertainment at the love shack it takes on more qualities of a person than an object.
Hyperbole
Notice me, take my hand Why are we strangers when Our love is strong Why carry on without me Everytime I try to fly, I fall Without my wings, I feel so small I guess I need you, baby And everytime I see you in my dreams I see your face, it's haunting me I guess I need you, baby I make believe that you are here It's the only way I see clear What have I done You seem to move on easy And everytime I try to fly, I fall Without my wings, I feel so small I guess I need you, baby And everytime I see you in my dreams I see your face, you're haunting me I guess I need you, baby I may have made it rain Please forgive me My weakness caused you pain And this song's my sorry At night I pray That soon your face will fade away And everytime I try to fly, I fall Without my wings, I feel so small I guess I need you, baby And everytime I see you in my dreams I see your face, you're haunting me I guess I need you, baby
The entire song is a hyperbole because she overuses the word "everytime". Nothing really occurs everytime.
Who's that girl, who's that girlWhen you see her, say a prayer and kiss your heart goodbyeShe's trouble, in a word get closer to the fireRun faster, her laughter burns you up insideYou're spinning round and roundYou can't get up, you try but you can'tChorus:Quien es esa niña, who's that girlSeñorita mas fina, who's that girlQuien es esa niña, who's that girlSeñorita mas fina, who's that girlYou try to avoid her, fate is in your handsShe's smiling, an invitation to the danceHer heart is on the street, tu corazon es suyoNow you're falling at her feetYou try to get away but you can't(chorus)Intermediate:Light up my life, so blind I can't seeLight up my life, no one can help me nowRun faster, her laughter burns you up insideHe's spinning round and roundYou can't get up, you try but you can't(chorus)(intermediate)Who's that girlNow, who's that girlNow, who's that girlNow, who's that girl(chorus)
This song also contains hyperbole because she says dramatic thigns like "no one can help me" and "you try to get away but you can't". These phrases are too definite for no reason. They are exaggerated.

Strike a pose
Strike a pose
Vogue, vogue, vogue
Vogue, vogue, vogue
Look around everywhere you turn is heartache
It's everywhere that you go (look around)
You try everything you can to escape
The pain of life that you know (life that you know)
When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for, so
[Chorus:]
Come on, vogue
Let your body move to the music (move to the music)
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue
Let your body go with the flow (go with the flow)
You know you can do it
All you need is your own imagination
So use it that's what it's for (that's what it's for)
Go inside, for your finest inspiration
Your dreams will open the door (open up the door)
It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl
If the music's pumping it will give you new life
You're a superstar, yes, that's what you are, you know it
[chorus, substituting "groove" for "move"]
Beauty's where you find it
Not just where you bump and grind it
Soul is in the musical
That's where I feel so beautiful
Magical, life's a ball
So get up on the dance floor
[chorus]

Don't just stand there, let's get to it
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it

Oooh, you've got to
Let your body move to the music
Oooh, you've got to just
Let your body go with the flow

In this song, Madonna makes many allusions to famous people, especially those of old Hollywood. Madonna also describes how they were famous or what they did to be popular. For example, Grace Kelly; Harlow, Jean
Picture of a beauty queen
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire
Ginger Rodgers, dance on air". Some of them were very beautiful and others are dancers.
Beautiful, dirty dirty rich rich dirty dirty
Beautiful dirty rich
Dirty dirty rich dirty dirty rich beautiful
Beautiful and dirty dirty rich rich dirty
We got a redlight
Pornographic dance fight
Systematic, honey
But we got no money
Our hair is perfect
While were all getting shit wrecked
It's automatic, honey
But we got no money
Daddy I'm so sorry, I'm so s-s-sorry yeah
We just like to party, like to p-p-party yeah
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
We live a cute life
Soundfanatic, pants tighter than plastic, honey
But we got no money
We do the dance right
We have got it made like
Ice cream topped with honey
But we got no money
Daddy I'm so sorry, I'm so s-s-sorry yeah
We just like to party, like to p-p-party yeah
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
A bang bang bang, bang bang bang, beautiful, dirty rich
A bang bang bang, bang bang bang, beautiful, dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich

Bang bang
This song is an example of ambiguity because there appears to be no direct references nor can anyone assume what she is talking about. Any inference is open. The poem is also a bit of a paradox because Gaga claims to be very rich but also have no money. What exactly makes her rich?
Every day is so wonderful
And suddenly, i saw debris
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed
I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down
So don't you bring me down today
To all your friends, you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The piece is gone left the puzzle undone
That's the way it is
You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down
Don't you bring me down today...
No matter what we do
(no matter what we do)
No matter what they say
(no matter what they say)
When the sun is shining through
Then the clouds won't stay
And everywhere we go
(everywhere we go)
The sun won't always shine
(sun won't always shine)
But tomorrow will find a way
All the other times
'cause we are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down, oh no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down
Don't you bring me down today
Don't you bring me down today
Don't you bring me down today
This is an example of allegory because not only is she speaking about herself and how distraught she feels when she is called ugly, but she is also referencing all of the girls in the world who are called ugly. Christina Aguilera is trying to make a point that no one should be called ugly and that women need to be more independent and stick up for themselves. A very feminist way of thinking.

The pain of life that you know (life that you know)
When all else fails and you long to be
Something better than you are today
I know a place where you can get away
It's called a dance floor, and here's what it's for, so
[Chorus:]
Come on, vogue
Let your body move to the music (move to the music)
Hey, hey, hey
Come on, vogue
Let your body go with the flow (go with the flow)
You know you can do it
All you need is your own imagination
So use it that's what it's for (that's what it's for)
Go inside, for your finest inspiration
Your dreams will open the door (open up the door)
It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl
If the music's pumping it will give you new life
You're a superstar, yes, that's what you are, you know it
[chorus, substituting "groove" for "move"]
Beauty's where you find it
Not just where you bump and grind it
Soul is in the musical
That's where I feel so beautiful
Magical, life's a ball
So get up on the dance floor
[chorus]
Vogue, (Vogue)
Beauty's where you find it (move to the music)
Vogue, (Vogue)
Beauty's where you find it (go with the flow)
Greta Garbo, and Monroe
Deitrich and DiMaggio
Marlon Brando, Jimmy Dean
On the cover of a magazine
Grace Kelly; Harlow, Jean
Picture of a beauty queen
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire
Ginger Rodgers, dance on air
They had style, they had grace
Rita Hayworth gave good face
Lauren, Katherine, Lana too
Bette Davis, we love you
Ladies with an attitude
Fellows that were in the mood
Don't just stand there, let's get to it
Strike a pose, there's nothing to it
Vogue, vogue
Oooh, you've got to
Let your body move to the music
Oooh, you've got to just
Let your body go with the flow
Oooh, you've got to
Vogue
In this song, Madonna makes many allusions to famous people, especially those of old Hollywood. Madonna also describes how they were famous or what they did to be popular. For example, Grace Kelly; Harlow, Jean
Picture of a beauty queen
Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire
Ginger Rodgers, dance on air". Some of them were very beautiful and others are dancers.
Beautiful, dirty dirty rich rich dirty dirty
Beautiful dirty rich
Dirty dirty rich dirty dirty rich beautiful
Beautiful and dirty dirty rich rich dirty
We got a redlight
Pornographic dance fight
Systematic, honey
But we got no money
Our hair is perfect
While were all getting shit wrecked
It's automatic, honey
But we got no money
Daddy I'm so sorry, I'm so s-s-sorry yeah
We just like to party, like to p-p-party yeah
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
We live a cute life
Soundfanatic, pants tighter than plastic, honey
But we got no money
We do the dance right
We have got it made like
Ice cream topped with honey
But we got no money
Daddy I'm so sorry, I'm so s-s-sorry yeah
We just like to party, like to p-p-party yeah
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
A bang bang bang, bang bang bang, beautiful, dirty rich
A bang bang bang, bang bang bang, beautiful, dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
Bang bang, we're beautiful and dirty rich
X5
Bang bang
This song is an example of ambiguity because there appears to be no direct references nor can anyone assume what she is talking about. Any inference is open. The poem is also a bit of a paradox because Gaga claims to be very rich but also have no money. What exactly makes her rich?
Every day is so wonderful
And suddenly, i saw debris
Now and then, I get insecure
From all the pain, I'm so ashamed
I am beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring me down
I am beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring me down
So don't you bring me down today
To all your friends, you're delirious
So consumed in all your doom
Trying hard to fill the emptiness
The piece is gone left the puzzle undone
That's the way it is
You are beautiful no matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
You are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring you down
Don't you bring me down today...
No matter what we do
(no matter what we do)
No matter what they say
(no matter what they say)
When the sun is shining through
Then the clouds won't stay
And everywhere we go
(everywhere we go)
The sun won't always shine
(sun won't always shine)
But tomorrow will find a way
All the other times
'cause we are beautiful no matter what they say
Yes, words won't bring us down, oh no
We are beautiful in every single way
Yes, words can't bring us down
Don't you bring me down today
Don't you bring me down today
Don't you bring me down today
This is an example of allegory because not only is she speaking about herself and how distraught she feels when she is called ugly, but she is also referencing all of the girls in the world who are called ugly. Christina Aguilera is trying to make a point that no one should be called ugly and that women need to be more independent and stick up for themselves. A very feminist way of thinking.

"You're so Vain"- Carly Simon
You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You?
You had me several years ago when I was still quite naive
Well you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved and one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You? Don't You?
I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You?
Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won
Then you flew your lear jet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well you're where you should be all the time
And when you're not you're with
Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend
Wife of a close friend, and...
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, I'll bet you think this song is about you
Don't you? Don't You? Don't you?
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you
I chose this song because whenever someone talks about Vanity, this is the first song that comes to their mind. Not only that but it has many uses of imagery. In the first stanza Carly sings,
"You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht
Your hat strategically dipped below one eye
Your scarf it was apricot
You had one eye in the mirror as you watched yourself gavotte
And all the girls dreamed that they'd be your partner
They'd be your partner, and... "
This stanza accurately paints a picture in our mind. I can easily picture a man on a boat surrounded by beautiful people while staring in a mirror.

Theme and Genre
I have decided that my theme is going to be Vanity and my genre is Pop Music. Pop is my favorite type of music so naturally I would pick it. I chose Vanity to be my theme because I love myself. I am more Vain than anyone else I know (and can you blame me?) and I greatly enjoy listening to songs about vanity.
